Ridiculous Rocks

Day 1 - June 14

Today our theme was how to tell others about geology! Everybody in our group thought that the coolest part of the trip was going to the museum and seeing the things it had to offer such as the shiny crystals and minerals. We also thought that the sphere's of rocks were cool. Today we learned that the earth is about 4.5 billion years old. We also learned that rocks can tell us lots about the history of the earth. We also learned that the deepest hole dug into the earth was only 6 miles deep. We learned about leucagneiss and how it is useful in mills such as the one we went to today because it isn't easy to erode. We also learned about how different types of rocks are used in mills to crush grain and corn and was useful in the times where you didn't just go to the grocery stores. At the museum we took notice in how different facts were displayed about geology. Rocks are really old and are used a lot in the world and have been here before everything else. You can apply what you learned when you pick up rocks and things like that by going and taking notice in things like faults and where they came from, whether inside the ground or worn down into that shape by erosion. These are the cool facts that you can share with family and other people whom you can inform.

Day 2 - June 15

Today our theme was how to collect information about the earth. To help learn about this we had many activites that involved taking waypoints with a big old GPS. We also made virtual tours our group decided to make our virtual tour about where benches are on the NC State campus. We walked out side and found a lot of intresting places to sit. We thought the benches made out of rock were better that benches made of other matrieals because they were cooler. They also were a little more comfy, believe it or not. The wooden benches retained much of the heat from the sun, but the stone benches were all in the shade. We also learned that if you want to find/ make a waypoint it is a little bit better to have a more sophisticated GPS. For an example our GPS kept "dying" in the heat. Today we learned that it is hard to be exact in goescience and that even though rocks are rough they make great seats. We decided that the best way to apply what we learnd is to realize that you cant always be exact but to realize that and to try to be as close as possible. Even though it was an extra part of our project, going inside and sitting on the red leather bench was by far the BEST bench ever!! It was so cool and replenishing to be in the Air Condition, after walking around in the hot sun for about two and a half hours. :)



Day 3 - June 16

Today we used the scientific method to see where the fault line was in Raleigh the first step is to observe. We observed that the outcrop of rock we saw at Umstead Park was naturally there. We can use the scientific method tot come to a conclusion that rocks on the fault line are mostly magnetic rocks or leucogneiss which is a type of strong rock. Some sources of leucogniess or magnetic rocks are outside of the recorded fault line. Next step in the scientific method is the hypothesis. We hypothesized that the big rock was part of the fault zone that runs through Raleigh. We tested or hypothesis by putting our GPS data of magnetic rocks around the campus on the computer (in arcGIS Explorer). In conclusion we think that the recorded fault line is a little bit off or inaccurate mostly because we have found other sources of magnetism that were not within the recorded fault line.

Day 4 - June 17

Today our theme was how to live with the earth. We took a guided tour of the Rockey Branch creek. We learned that the creek was destroyed when NC State bought the property in 1887. We learned that the creek was destroyed because farmers previously owned the land. They stuck all the sediment in the creek and stuck it in the flood plain and made the river straight. After that we saw more stretches of the creek. Other parts of the creek were less restored that others but were in the process of restoration. To keep the creeks and rivers nice and clean we have to make the stream meander or bend for a natural effect. If we did not make the streams meander than the river banks would erode away. In order to keep our ponds clean we must have a small outer pond or wetland to keep some sediment from resting at the bottom of the pond. We went through the bushes to see different rocks and how the pools and riffles became man~made. We talked to one another about how some plants had to be put in the river beds or creeks so it could help with the habitat. We saw the growth difference in different parts where they started. For instance near the big ditch there were small plants because they haven't been there that long, compared to other trees that are really tall and have been there longer. We were told about how they took apart the parking lot to let out the rest of the creek underneath. This process was expensive but they still got it done. So we learned a lot today about the geology of this area.

We went on a tour of a creek in the process of being restored on NC State's campus. We learned that rivers have pools and riffles that alternate.

We found an outcrop of leucogneiss next to the creek. We knew it was leucogneiss because it attracted our magnets.




Day 5 - June 18

Final thoughts about our GIMS Program or the summer camp?

Today, we all made a plan how we were going to make our presentation. There were three choices, and they were, Mills, Experiments, and Fault Line. We researched some facts and looked at our waypoints we made for the fault zone! Then we typed our facts and found our pictures. We worked as a team and disided what are tittle would be. The poster turned out nice and colorful. The whole goescience thing has been ok and i liked it aside from waking up so early during the summer and it being so hot out and this what a great experience over all. It was fun to come in and learn so many new things and meet so many new people. We had a great time on all of our feild trips and reschearing so many things about the places we went to see. We learned a lot indivudualy and together, we also learned a lot about diffeent people. We learned about different ypes of rocks and soil and the eart in general.
