Day 1 - June 14

Old Yates Mill

The theme of Monday is “How do we tell others about Earth?” I think the most fun thing we did is go to Yate’s Mill and North Carolina Natural Science Museum. Today I learned that a mill can provide energy to grind corn. I can apply from today’s learning that Yate’s Mill is in the middle of a huge geological area because today it could be called a shopping area. When your corn is being ground you can go fishing or your horse can get their shoes polished. - Shreya

What is today’s theme? How we tell each other about the earth.
What did you like the most about today’s program? The field trips and the activities we did. My favorite was the museum we went to.
What did u learn about today? I learned about a new rock called leucogneiss. It was metamorphic and never erodes.
What can u apply to today’s activities? It reminds me of geosciences in the fall. --Carter

Irene –
1. I thought that the main theme today was how to communicate the public about geology and make it interesting. We also spoke about how the earth was made.
2. Today I enjoyed going to Yates Mill and learning about the effort it takes to find a good place to build a mill and how the millers used geology to find a good place to build a lake. The way the millers used geology is they look for Leucogneiss which is a special type of rock in the way that millers liked it because when there were floods the water would pound against the rock instead the mill. It is also a metamorphic rock.
3. Today we learn how to communicate about geosciences. First we went to the mill and had someone talk to us about geology and then we went to the museums and talked about how we could make some of the exhibit better.
4. I can share stuff about Yates Mill like how the millers used geology and how we should communicate about geology.

Today's theme was how to communicate with the rest of the population about the oval terrestrial ball we call home, the world and/ or the earth.
What like most about today's program was visiting familiar places but with a different pair of eyes or a different view.
I learned that there are small details in everything that no one ever notices and that geology is an unappreciated and under thought subject.
I can apply this to life by looking for the small things that no one else notices.

Day 2 - June 15


Ammonite fossils in the marble wall, Reynolds Coliseum lobby.

Today’s theme was to play a GPS game and make our own virtual tour.
I liked the part where I found some biking goggles.
I learned that there are fossils (ammonites) and that they are very OLD.
This could help me that in the future that if I come upon a fossil I could possibly name it. --Carter

Today’s theme is “How do we collect information about earth?” The thing I liked most about today was walking around campus and visiting different buildings around campus. Today I learned that rocks are not only used for decoration but they can also be used for foundation. I can apply from today’s learning that rocks can be used for any reason like foundations, pottery, utensils, and benches. -Shreya

Today’s theme was how we interact with the earth like how do we use its materials to make stuff and how do we find specific locations on the earth to find a specific object.
My favourite part is how we explored the NC state campus to find specific locions and trying t find out the materials that that object is made of and what was special about it. And also just hangin with da group.
I learned the history of the rocks of NC state like how there are fossils in the Renolds coliseum walls and the granite of the bell tower or the granite used as a adamant roof.
This could help me understand our human to earth interactions --Matt

1. Today’s theme was mostly geology and it was stuff like geo cashing and using geospatial technology like GPS’s and it was pretty fun even though I hardly knew how to use the little thing, but still cool. Also using those things uses just a lot of walking to do.
2. My favorite program today was the nature tour because it was fun to walk around the campus and see amazing things, my two favorite sights were the bell tower and the graffiti place. But m favorite out of those two would be the bell tower, it was awesome to see such an amazingly tall tower, even though it wall not the tallest tower, t was nice to see something that tall.
3. I learned that amazing things can be built into buildings. The bell tower was made of granite and the Brooks hall was made of marble.

Irene –
Today we had the theme of how we collected information about the earth and how to us the GPS. I really enjoyed walking around campus and taking pictures. My group also won the fun waypoint game after lunch. Today we also learned how to take waypoints using GPS and how to read GPS coordinates. I will be able to use the GPS skills if I ever get a GPS or if I family member needs help with one. I will also be able to participate in geo cashing with friends and family members.

Day 3 - June 16

Fault Zone Map -- Scientific Method Exercise

The theme of today was scientific method and rocks in the fault zone. Today I liked hiking on the Umstead Park trail. I learned that rocks and soil that are naturally occurring in the fault zone are magnetic. I can apply from today’s learning that the scientific method will make me observe things in a different way. -Shreya

1) our theme was scientific method and applying it to maps and previously graphed areas where geologists believe where the certain rocks are. Like you first observe something are think about and then hypothesis or also known as a educated guess or explanation for an answer to a problem. Then your research and experiment and stuff like that to prove your hypothesis. After a thorough proving streak you can make it a theory. And a theory is a 99% fact thingymajig cuz if you cant prove it wrong it isn’t scientific and if it aint scientific it can no longer be a thermo to something that doesn’t exist
2) what I liked the most was being on the trail just because it was field work in a forest which is my kinda place, i also liked how science is not all just technology but just getting outside with simple tools and learning what no one else really cared to learn about in the natural world.
3) I have learned that to find a specific thing you must look not at a map only but you must go out and look for characteristics found in a thingyamajig and look where no one else look and you might find what you where looking for.
I learned not to rely on someone eleses data and modern science does not rely on complicated technologys but every day things. --Matt

1. Today’s Theme was about how the earth’s rocks and how they are formed and they are formed and many different ways. Also we have learned about magnetism in rocks.
2. My favorite part was the hike, even though it was tough and tiring, it was pretty fun.
3. I learned that rocks that are quartz are resistant to erosion
4. That rocks are an big part of nature.---Myles

Today’s theme was studying rocks and see their different properties
I liked that we got to go on the trail and saw a lot of wildlife
I learned that lecuoneiss is a deformed version of granite

I can apply to today o next time I see lecouneiss that I can tell them that it’s a deformed version of granite

Irene- This morning we went to Umstead and hiked. While we were walking we took pictures of rocks outcrops and marked them in the GPS. We also wrote down a description of the rock/ rocks. In the description we wrote how they were the same from other rocks we saw, and of course the description itself. Then we sat down by the creek and had a seminar. We talked about the scientific method and what it is. We all decided that it was: You observed about something, and then you hypothesized about it and ran an experiment to tell whether you were right or wrong. You will then redo this scientific method much time after that because the thing about science is you try to prove it wrong not right. We then came back and took our data from the field and explored it on a map on the computer and learn what geologist do on the computer. So to sum up today we saw what geologist did and did it. So I can apply how to my life what geologists do. We also study leucogneiss and how to find it.

Day 4 - June 17

1)Our theme was how we live with the earth.
2)I liked the tour of NC States processes in fixing our streams and how little things make a big difference in the ecosystem.
3)I learned that there is a group of people out there fixing the problems that humans created in the past.
4)I can apply this to life by fixing problems in my local communities. --Matt

Irene – today we focused slightly on the aquatic life but mainly how to protect and how to save the ponds, creeks and animals. We learned that there are many ways to protect the wild life and I really liked the way I found out that many people fix the environment and making it a beautiful place to see wildlife can use this in life in the way that I can remember that there are consequences in the ways of building things and run off.

Today’s theme was “How do we live with the Earth?” Today I liked learning about streams and how they work. Today I learned that streams don’t end at one place they empty out in one place and keep going till it empties out into the ocean. From today’s learning I can apply that humans should be careful where they put their construction supplies if they are near a creek or a waterway. If they are eroded into the waterways the organisms that are in there can get a disease or die.

Today’s theme was to learn about different restoration of a stream
I liked that we saw the different kinds of wildlife such as a fawn
I learned that vegetation is very important to a stream because it feed the micro vertebrae
I can apply to this In the future by not to destroy vegetation because it helps streams --Carter

Day 5 - June 18

Final thoughts about our GIMS Program or the summer camp?

This summer camp was fun. We learned about geology and how to use GPSs. I think going to Umstead Park and geocaching was fun this week. I would want to go to another Geoscience camp. -Shreya
